  • A food tour of Leeds with Jet2

How often do you get the chance to go on a foodie tour of a city? Whether it’s your home city or a weekend break somewhere new, it’s fun to explore. I recently spent the afternoon in Leeds with Jet2 and Leeds Food Tours for a tasty trip around the city.

Everywhere we visited is a destination that Jet2 fly to from Leeds Bradford Airport. So here’s some inspiration for your next city break (and some foodie recommendations if you’re visiting Leeds – call it a double whammy)

    I Am Doner

    Germany – Berlin

First stop on the food tour – I Am Doner which transports you to the bustling cosmopolitan streets of Berlin. Did you know that doner kebabs are more popular there than currywurst? I know that was a surprise to me. I tried my first doner kebab here and enjoyed it. Succulent meat, fresh salad, sauces all wrapped up in a warm freshly baked wrap.

I really like Berlin as a city. My most recent trip in September was a solo one and purely focused around running the marathon, however I did get to see some sights too. My earlier trip – in 2014 was a winter city break and it was COLD. September was nice, mild and shorts weather though I could’ve been lucky with the weather. Berlin is a city I’d recommend visiting all year round, just layer up if you go in the colder months.

There’s so much to do and see, it’s a really walkable city and friendly.

    El Gato Negro

    Spain – Barcelona

El Gato Negro is an award winning tapas restaurant found in Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. The Leeds venue is a bright, airy restaurant and you can expect traditional Spanish flavours and techniques, plus some seasonal twists. We had the manchego, croquetas and catalan bread and we didn’t leave a crumb between us!

Many years ago I visited Barcelona which is a fantastic city break destination. There’s plenty to see, there’s the beach too and you can hop on a train and visit some quieter coastal locations too if the hustle and bustle of the city feels too much. La Sagrada Familia is obviously a must see, as well as catching Gaudi architecture, don’t miss Parc Guell. You also might remember when I visited Lanzarote on a press trip with Jet2 – not mainland Spain but there’s some good tapas spots on the island there too!

    Tavernaki Bistro

We visited Tavernaki Bistro for some traditional Greek and Cypriot dishes. Everything about this place was a triumph, down to the blue window seats. I’m yet to visit Greece but safe to say the food was a big winner for me! We had Greek salad, feta saganaki (feta folded in filo pastry with honey and cinnamon) revithia (Greek chickpea stew) chicken souvlaki, fasolada, bread and tzatziki. My sister has visited Santorini and Rhodes and both of these (along with many others) are destinations you can fly to with Jet2. So these photos are from her trips for a change!

    Stuzzi

    Italy – Naples, Rome, Sorrento

    jet2 food tour leeds stuzzi
jet2 food tour leeds stuzzi arancino

If you visit Stuzzi (or browse the website you’ll see straight away) that Stuzzi is short for Stuzzichini – “little plates of Italian cuisine served in small osterias and bars throughout Italy especially in and around Venice, traditionally eaten by hand, in-between drinks to “keep ones self going”. We sampled one of these little plates in the form of Arancino. Firstly, wow the courgette, pea and mint risotto ball was huge and possibly the best I’ve had. I haven’t sampled Arancino in Sicily, but I did have it in Naples (and shhhh, but Stuzzi were on par)

If you’re looking to get away on your own Italian adventure, then with Jet2 you’re spoilt for choice – Florence, Naples (and Sorrento), Pisa, Rome, Sicily to name a few. I’ve visited Naples, Sorrento and Rome from their destinations and all have their own charm. If you could only visit one and the theme was ‘city break’ then Rome is the one. Wanting some seaside relaxation and to visit the Amalfi Coast, then Sorrento would be my recommendation. When I visited (back in 2019) I flew into Naples, took the train to Rome, then to Sorrento before flying back out of Naples. It was a packed trip, but aren’t city breaks always like that?!

    Mr Mackerel

Turkey – Bodrum, Fethiye, Marmaris, Olu Deniz

Our last foodie stop took us into Kirkgate Market where we visited Mr Mackerel and yes, this spot serves up fish. I had a mackerel sandwich which was great. I went on a trip to Turkey back in 2018 visiting Bodrum, Olu Deniz and Fethiye and the scenery there is fantastic. This little viewpoint we stopped at along the way from Bodrum to Marmaris was a highlight and I watched people kitesurfing.

Yeah some great spots on the food tour, definitely recommend it. Oh it was so good to look back through travel photos – digging out the Barcelona ones from 2016 was a little bit tricky!
