Sunderland Restaurant Week is coming back. Get the dates in your diary now; 17th March – 25th March.
With a host of restaurants taking part; there’s something to satisfy all tastes. With some newcomers, such as El Nido, bringing in a taste of Mexico and fresh from its royal opening, The Engine Rooms at The Fire Station offering hearty family meals, it’s time to put down the teatowel and head on out into town.
Treated to a preview safari supper, akin to other Eat Drink Sunderland events, I made my way around some of the restaurants taking part. Starting at El Nido I tasted the delights of their tacos and a few new dishes from the upcoming menu. If you like spice, let them know and you’ll not be disappointed.
Moving on to No 2 Church Lane, we had everything from halloumi fries, to jackfruit topped fries and a variety of burgers to taste. I’ve been fond of their burgers for a while, so would highly recommend a visit. They have a huge selection of beers too if that’s your tipple of choice.
With little room to spare, I crossed over the road to The Engine Rooms located inside the old Fire Station. A building that’s kept pieces of its history from the sign, to the old desk and fire buckets hanging on the wall. It’s got such a welcoming cosy feel and would be a great place for a family meal, or even for a couple drinks at the bar. Also part of the same group, and conveniently just a stone’s throw away, is The Peacock. Or, as some of the locals will know it, The Londonderry. Given a facelift and a new lease of life, The Peacock offers your favourite dishes; think mince and dumplings, bangers and mash, pie – warming meals – and they rustled us up some great desserts. From carrot cake cheesecake, to cherry Bakewell pudding and custard and some seriously rich chocolate brownies.
Offers start from £5 (including lunchtime coffee deals) and go up to £15 for a three course meal, so it’s time to scour the menus, pick out some favourites and get yourself out for a midweek treat.
