  • The perfect digital detox at Hewn Yorkshire

Hewn Yorkshire is the perfect place for a digital detox, a romantic trip away, or even just time to slow down and relax. Hewn is a short drive from Richmond, a market town in North Yorkshire, but you’ll completely forget how close you are to any surrounding urban areas when you arrive, hear the birdsong and feel the stresses from your everyday life just melt away.

    The cabins and the facilities

Hewn Yorkshire offer two different glamping cabin locations – The Quarry and The Foxwood. We stayed in the latter, which is dog friendly. Both locations offer a wood fired hot tub, outdoor seating and a firepit (with more logs available to purchase from reception) as well as great interiors. The Foxwood cabins are more Scandinavian inspired with a minimalist design whereas The Quarry offers a darker colour palette. Both have a kitchenette with all the facilities you need for self catering, we made fajitas. There’s a swing grill for the firepit so you could have a BBQ if you wanted. There’s also a smart TV, which we never switched on, I’ll take the sound of the birds outside instead, but if you weren’t so lucky with nice weather, a cosy night in sounds lovely.

The wood fired hot tub is pre-heated ahead of your arrival and what a treat! Each of the 12 cabins have their own private hot tub. This is perfect for relaxing and we even had a final quick soak before checking out!

If you book the celebration package, you’ll get a chilled bottle of Prosecco and marshmallows. There’s nothing cosier than toasting marshmallows over the firepit and gazing at the stars in the clear night sky. Because there’s no light pollution, Hewn is a great place for stargazing (provided you’ve not got cloud cover) so get comfy and take a look at the night sky.

Check in time is a short window between 3-5pm, meaning minimal disruption to guests already staying. Once you arrive, you’ll understand and I’d recommend arriving for 3pm and maximising your stay. Check out is by 10am which allows a nice slow morning before you pack up and head home.

For ultimate relaxation, book the sauna

The sauna is open to book in hourly slots from 10am through to 8pm everyday. Each session costs £20 and that’s a private session for you (and a guest too) with a key provided from reception for access. To get to the sauna, you’ll take a short walk through the woodland area.

The sauna is open to non-residents too, at the same price. It’s incredible value and I’d highly recommend a visit, especially if you’re in the North Yorkshire area and it’s only a short drive.

    Things to do nearby

Hewn is a great place for exploring North Yorkshire. You’re a short drive from Richmond which is a charming market town. Take a walk along the river Swale, see Richmond Falls and enjoy Tapas at Number 29.

Go a little further afield to Reeth and take in the glorious Yorkshire fresh air. We did a short walk which mostly followed the river, crossing a suspension bridge and stepping stones. If there’s been heavy rain, take care near the river as the stepping stones may not be safe to cross. Finish your walk with coffee or ice cream by the village green.

From Hewn, you could take a day trip over to The Lake District. Some of my favourite places to visit are Ambleside, Grasmere, Windermere and Buttermere. If you time it right, you could take in the beautiful Rannerdale bluebells on a walk from Buttermere. Looking for something suitable all year round? You can’t go wrong with Loughrigg Fell from Ambleside. Extend the walk by taking in Rydal Water and Rydal Caves. Honestly, anywhere you go in The Lake District is lovely!

Have you been to Hewn? If not, add it to your list of places to stay. It’s well worth a visit!

I was invited to visit Hewn Yorkshire for a press visit, including access to the sauna. All photos and words are my own. I'm considering a return trip in autumn, to experience that quiet and calm once again.
