• Sunderland Restaurant Week 16 – 24 March

It’s back! Your favourite week on Wearside – Sunderland Restaurant Week!

Make sure you’ve noted 16-24 March in your diary. This time there’s over 40 venues taking part in Sunderland Restaurant Week.

For the last few years I’ve been invited along to a safari supper ahead of the big week. That really just means I’ve been to a different restaurant for starter, main and dessert – it’s a fun way to check out the menus on offer and sample some different dishes.

This time we started in Keel Square to check out the newly opened Keel Tavern (which look to have a crackin’ pie deal on during the aforementioned dates) and sample some starters – including some lovely garlic mushrooms and pork belly. Next up, Saba Maison de Luxe for some incredibly tasty Indian cuisine. Then Lucky Cat Boba in new premises on High Street West for bubble tea and desserts. I left absolutely stuffed and pretty much waddled back to my car!

Here’s my top picks on where to get those reservations secured. The food offering in Sunderland has stepped up recently and it’s very exciting:

    My Delhi

I’ve been to My Delhi a number of times (including this restaurant week preview) and the food is fantastic. It’s Indian street food style with roadside curries served up in a buzzing atmosphere and a fun, bright restaurant. Their deal is £15 for a street plate (starter) and roadside curry with rice – very good value if you ask me.

    Saba Maison de Luxe

A new one I visited on our preview evening, in the old Lambton Worm venue (if you remember the old ‘spoons pub) anyway it’s had a makeover since then and feels more chic than sticky floors. What I sampled was fantastic. That prawn biryani was delicious and the chickpea veggie curry was really tasty. Their deal is £20 for a starter, main and rice or chips and a plain naan. Given the higher prices on the main menu this is a really good offer.

A new restaurant that opened late last year and a really exciting addition to Sunderland. Koji offers gyoza, bao buns and ramen. I’ve sampled two out of three of those and will be returning. I also believe there’s fried chicken on the menu too. Their offer for restaurant week is £20 including kimchi, spicy cucumber or edamame beans, bao bun, ramen / noodle dish (with a supplement for duck) I’d highly recommend the katsu bao buns and I followed that with chicken ramen. Very tasty. Very filling.

    Pho 179

The first Vietnamese restaurant I’ve known of in Sunderland this place offers dishes from 3 different regions of the country. £15 for 2 course or £20 for 3 courses (not including drinks) The curry was very good and I’d go back to try the Pho.

£15 for two pizzas or flatbreads is a great offer. I’ve had pizza at Fausto a couple of times now and it’s really good. Gluten free bases available too.

    Lucky Cat Boba

If you’ve got a sweet tooth then this is your spot. Enjoy bubble tea and a special bubble waffle for £10. There’s also a coffee and cake offer.

    Keel Tavern

If you’re looking for craft beers and a hearty meal (or you’re a pie fan) then Keel Tavern is the one for you. As you might’ve guessed from the name, it’s in Keel Square which seems to be the place for developments lately. Their £15 offer for 2 courses is great value, or you can make that 3 courses for £20. Also available is their pie deal, 2 for £20.
