Hands up, who could use a spa day?
I was invited along recently for a spa day at The Retreat at Redworth Hall and I definitely needed the opportunity to slow down for a day! I couldn’t book us in quick enough!

Redworth Hall is a Jacobean manor house tucked away in leafy surroundings – 26 acres of landscaped grounds, in Newton Aycliffe. It’s really easy to drive to, around half an hour from Durham and just off the A1.
They’ve spent millions on the leisure and spa facilities at Redworth Hall and it’s been completely transformed to create a new Decleor spa with six luxurious treatment rooms (including a dual room – perfect for couples), a relaxation room featuring Gharieni thermal loungers, a new L’Oreal hair and nail salon and an expansive new gym. There’s also a new restaurant and bar, The Lounge, offering an all-day menu.
We arrived around 10am and decided to make use of the facilities before our treatments. Heading down to the pool area, we found some seats – always a necessity if you’re looking for somewhere to keep your towel/robe/any belongings you want poolside.

The pool is within a sizeable orangery style room, with the jacuzzi tub tucked into an alcove, the sauna just a few metres away and the steam room just along towards the changing facilities.
One thing to perhaps be aware of, if you’re visiting The Retreat and wanting to use the facilities, is the classes on offer. Whilst we were poolside there was an aqua class taking place – this only took up about half of the pool, and guests were using the other side of the pool for some swimming alongside this, but it is something to consider if you’re wanting to have some time to relax poolside, it may be a good idea to double check the timetable and shuffle around accordingly.
Speaking of classes, the new exercise studio features a ‘Fitness on Demand’ virtual class system, offering over 2,500 class options, alongside instructor led classes – so fitness fans, you may be interested in starting your spa day with some high intensity.
Spa Treatments
The Retreat offers a range of treatments from facials to massages and beauty treatments in the L’Oreal hair salon and Jessica nails for manicures and pedicures. I’d booked us both in for massages, I had the Hot Lava Shell Massage (having tried hot stones before I thought this would be something similar) and my boyfriend had an Aromatherapy Body Massage. Both treatments lasted 55 minutes and price wise were £60 for aromatherapy and £65 for lava shells – so really quite competitively priced to other spas.

The relaxation room is certainly somewhere you can chill and enjoy some quiet time. After my massage I could’ve had a nap in there, so if you’re visiting for a spa treatment do make sure you take some time to switch off in this room. There were no magazines when we visited, which was quite nice as you could completely switch off. Though if you want to take the time to flick through magazines or get into that book you’re reading, be sure to pack them into your bag.
Dining in The Lounge
After our treatments and plenty of time in the relaxation room we headed into The Lounge for Afternoon Tea. Something that’s always a bit of a welcome treat for me and it always seems fitting for a spa day! A selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes soon arrived to our table and we made our best attempt to polish it off… Of course we took a box home with the scones and cakes that were too good to leave behind!

The Lounge restaurant and bar is really bright and airy with a faux cherry blossom tree in the centre. We dined at around 2pm and there were other guests dining there too, with a mix in their cosy spa robes and some perhaps just visiting for a quick bite. The atmosphere was very relaxed.

As spa experiences go in the North East, The Retreat at Redworth Hall is definitely one of the most affordable:
- A Retreat Escape is only £40 for full use of the facilities and a two course lunch.
- Their Vitality Spa Day costs £60 and includes a 35 minute Decleor facial, a two course lunch and use of the facilities.
- Want to treat someone special to a spa day too? Try the Just the Two of Us for £120 including a 40 minute massage in the dual treatment room, two course lunch with Prosecco and use of the facilities.
The Retreat also offers a range of indulgent spa experiences as gift vouchers – for individual treatments, to luxurious spa days and overnight breaks.
